A city in action...

- Pierre Gour, Mayor of L’Assomption, and Michel St-Cyr at the torch walk that marked the end of a four-day celebration of the Universal Children’s Day.
Under the theme “L’Assomption in Action for the Rights of Children” a 17-member committee organized a four-day program of outstanding activities. The committee members came from various L’Assomption areas and organizations including the CLSC Meilleur, the Police Department, the Centre jeunesse Lanaudière-Sud, the Commission des loisirs de L’Assomption, the Commission scolaire des Affluents, the Cégep régional de Lanaudière, the Collège de L’Assomption, the Théâtre Les Clefs Magiques, the Théâtre Hector-Charland and of course, the Marie-Vincent Foundation.
Heading the organizing committee, the City’s dynamic mayor Pierre Gour intends to make “L’Assomption en action pour les droits de l’enfant” an annual event.
The activities on the program included: a forum on the “Droits et Responsabilités des adolescents” broadcast on Radio-Canada’s radio network, “Le Secret d’Oliver” a musical by Damien Boyer-Hétu, drawing exhibits, live painting and concerts highlighting the work of talented young amateurs. “Les enfants au pouvoir”, a highly prized activity, connected some thirty business leaders, each with a child to whom they have handed over their schedule and responsibilities for a half-day.
A torch walk in the streets of L’Assomption closed these days, with a thousand persons making their way to the Louis-Laberge park where the City had planted 42 trees symbolizing the 42 children’s rights under the 1989 Convention. The Marie-Vincent Foundation helped finance the installation of ten permanent posters in this wooded area, each calling attention to a child’s right and responsibility to “build a better world”.
