The consequences of sexual assault on adult life
An Écho survey provided researchers with disturbing statistics that helped them understand the disastrous consequences of sexual assault on the adult lives of young victims.
- One adult Québécois in six has experienced childhood sexual violence.
- In 84% of cases, the victims know their sexual abusers.
- Half of the aggressors were friends and family members.
- Nearly half of the victims are between six and eleven years old the first time they become victims of sexual assault.
- One victim in five has been sexually assaulted a second time during their lives, and in most cases the second incident occurred during adolescence.
- One victim in five has never reported their sexual assault.
- Sexual assault victims are three times more likely to abuse alcohol during their lifetimes and more of them consume alcohol on a daily basis.
